A large proportion of the population is Protestant, the result of a century of ministry by US Congregationals and the German Liebenzell Mission, but nominalism and cronyism in leadership are widespread. Pray for revival among these long-standing groups. The great majority of Marshallese are Protestant and nearly half are evangelical. The churches have great influence at every level in society, but often fail to create mature disciples. The United Church of Christ, which was the de facto state Church, is losing in numbers and spirituality. The Asian population is diverse. There are over 20 Asian congregations – Korean, Filipino and Chinese; most are growing and have vigorous outreach to their compatriots. Opportunity abounds to reach especially the Japanese and Chinese (both from Mainland China and Taiwan); several thousand migrant Chinese factory workers have been won to Christ over the years. Challenge for Prayer
Hindrances to the gospel need to be removed. Closed cultures and strong traditionalism make many villages and outlying islands unwilling for change. The debilitating effects of US aid, material comforts and enormous consumption of beer make discipleship and commitment rare. Only the NT is available in Palauan (and nothing in Sonorol or Tobian), so theological depth is lacking.
