Challenges for Prayer

The Netherlands has two major claims to fame:
a) A glorious history as a Christian nation – its fight for religious freedom, ministry to refugees and Jews, and a record of extensive involvement in missions to other lands.
b) A decadent present as a secular society that has turned its back on its past. The number of Christians in this generation is dramatically declining, and today’s openly permissive society renounces its heritage. There are few restrictions on drugs, deviant lifestyles, prostitution, homosexuality and abortion. The Netherlands is the first country to legalize euthanasia and is a world leader in promoting post-Christian, secular and New Age worldviews and values. Pray for a revival that restores the nation spiritually. Pray that the government may also be influenced for good.
The tolerance for which the Dutch are famous is strained in Europe’s most crowded country as cultural and religious tensions multiply. It would appear that this vaunted tolerance was largely indifference. The once-liberal immigration policies are now tightening, religious expression and missionary work are often curtailed, and many Muslim communities fail to integrate into Dutch life and society and face increasing antipathy. Pray for this crisis to induce serious soul-searching that would cause many Dutch to rediscover their Christian roots and many believers to reach out with the good news to these groups.

Challenges for Prayer

Freedom for the gospel has not resulted in a great harvest. Nominalism, superstition and growing marginal sects show how few understand the message of salvation. Catholics are the majority on all islands but St Eustatius, which is predominantly Protestant. Pray that the large majority who call themselves Christian might discover a dynamic relationship with the living Saviour.
Evangelical witness progresses slowly but steadily. A vital, growing Church on every island is a target for prayer. Pentecostal/charismatic (often single-congregation denominations) and Baptist groups are the fastest growing and most outreach-oriented.

Psalm 16

Psalm 16

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 16

miktam[a] of David. 1 Keep me safe, my God,
   for in you I take refuge.
 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
   apart from you I have no good thing.”
3 I say of the holy people who are in the land,
   “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
4 Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
   I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
   or take up their names on my lips.
 5 LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup;
   you make my lot secure.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
   surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
   even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I keep my eyes always on the LORD.
   With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
   my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
   nor will you let your faithful[b] one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
   you will fill me with joy in your presence,
   with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
