1 John 5

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Concluding Affirmations

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

    Nehemiah 9

    The Israelites Confess Their Sins

    1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads. 2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers. 3 They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God. 4 Standing on the stairs were the Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani—who called with loud voices to the LORD their God. 5 And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah—said: "Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. [a] " "Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
    7 "You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and named him Abraham. 8 You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.

    9 "You saw the suffering of our forefathers in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea. [b] 10 You sent miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh, against all his officials and all the people of his land, for you knew how arrogantly the Egyptians treated them. You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day. 11 You divided the sea before them, so that they passed through it on dry ground, but you hurled their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into mighty waters. 12 By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.

    13 "You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good. 14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses. 15 In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.

    16 "But they, our forefathers, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and did not obey your commands. 17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them, 18 even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, 'This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,' or when they committed awful blasphemies.

    19 "Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the desert. By day the pillar of cloud did not cease to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take. 20 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. 21 For forty years you sustained them in the desert; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.

    Proverbs 23 (New International Version)

    Proverbs 23

    1 When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what [a] is before you,

    2 and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.

    3 Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.

    4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.

    5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.

    6 Do not eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies;

    7 for he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost. [b] "Eat and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

    8 You will vomit up the little you have eaten and will have wasted your compliments.

    9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.

    10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,

    11 for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.

    12 Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.

    13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

    14 Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. [c]

    15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad;

    16 my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.

    17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.

    18 There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

    19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.

    20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,

    21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

    22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

    23 Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.

    24 The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.

    25 May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!

    26 My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways,

    27 for a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

    28 Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men.

    29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

    30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.

    31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly!

    32 In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.

    33 Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.

    34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging.

    35 "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"

    Psalm 115 (New International Version)

    Psalm 115

    1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.

    2 Why do the nations say, "Where is their God?"

    3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.

    4 But their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.

    5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see;

    6 they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell;

    7 they have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

    8 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

    9 O house of Israel, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield.

    10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield.

    11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield.

    12 The LORD remembers us and will bless us: He will bless the house of Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron,

    13 he will bless those who fear the LORD— small and great alike.

    14 May the LORD make you increase, both you and your children.

    15 May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

    16 The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth he has given to man.

    17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD, those who go down to silence;

    18 it is we who extol the LORD, both now and forevermore. Praise the LORD.
