Challenges for Prayer
The role of missionaries has changed over the years as Brazil’s evangelicals have grown and matured. Expatriate workers are most needed in training leaders, preparing Brazilian missionaries, helping locals establish holistic ministries and pioneering work in the Amazon region. Missions with the largest number of workers: BMM, NTM, CC, ABWE, YWAM, PCKH(Korea), Brazil Gospel Fellowship, CW, WEC, Project Amazon. Pray that the foreign missionary force would be deployed in a strategic manner most beneficial to the Brazilian Church and mission movement.Christian literature and media.
a) Scriptures. A large proportion of evangelicals read the Bible daily. The Bible Society alone sells/distributes over 5 million Bibles per year; the Gideons distribute 6.7 million NTs per year. Through these and other groups, up to 300 million Scripture portions and pieces of Christian literature are distributed each year.
b) Christian books. Brazil’s most widely sold books are about magic, the occult and psychographed (dictated by the dead) books. Evangelicals are not avid consumers of Christian books, despite there being many Christian publishing houses. Pray for more Christian books that will resonate with the Brazilian mentality to both disciple Christians and challenge non-Christians.
c) The JESUS film is available in 25 languages, including 22 Amerindian languages.
d) Radio and TV are booming areas of ministry. There are countless radio programmes. Many larger churches have their own TV stations, either local or national. These transmit good content but also the bad aspects of “show-biz Christianity”. Internationally, TWR, HCJB and others beam over 1,000 hours across FM, AM and shortwave each week.
e) Audio resources. GRN has prepared tapes in 90 indigenous languages, many of which are the only Christian material for that whole language.WBT, UBS, FCBH and others are part of the resource development.
f) Internet. The tech-savvy younger generation connect with each other, watch or hear sermons online and access Bible study, discipleship and prayer materials on the myriad websites run by churches or para-church ministries. This is an increasingly vital part of effective young people’s ministry in particular.
