“He who restrains his
words has knowledge, And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding”
(Proverbs 17:27 N.A.S.B.).
and
“A man of knowledge
uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered”. (Proverbs
17:27 N.I.V.)
We must keep a tight reign on our words! Although the tongue
is small,
James teaches how the tongue is powerful–like a bit that controls a
horse, a rudder that controls a ship, a small fire that sets a forest ablaze,
although it is a small part of our body it can set us on the course to hell (James
3:2-6)yet, many people give little to no thought to restraining this powerful and
deadly device.
Men and women that understand, will give great thought to what needs to be
said and what should be left unsaid.
They recognize what is meant in (Proverbs 15:18 N.I.V.) that "a hot tempered man stirs up dissension,
but a patient man calms a quarrel".
So they strive to have a cool spirit–one that is composed and calm not letting circumstance dictate their actions and words, one that is
controlled keeping their words in check, and one that is able to deal with
emotional issues without overreacting. This is more easily accomplished with the help of the Holy Spirit.
