Challenges for Prayer
Leadership in the churches is a challenge. The lack of Belgian, and especially Flemish, Christian workers and pastors is crippling indigeneity and growth. There are very few full-time pastors; most are bivocational. This in turn undermines first-generation believers (the majority of indigenous Belgian evangelicals), since they need solid discipleship in post-Christian Belgium. Immigrant churches, through their tithing, have shown that it is possible to support a full-time pastor, even with a small congregation. Pray, in this light, for the ongoing work of well-established Belgian Bible training institutions.Specific, focused ministry is vital in a nation lacking moral absolutes and with churches lacking the leadership necessary to mentor and guide. Pray specifically for:
a) Francophone children’s ministry. Objectif 4-14, created in 2007, emphasizes children’s ministries to evangelical Francophone churches. Results were so positive that ongoing collaboration, resource development, Internet outreach and, in a few cases, new church plants continue today. CEF, BEM, AI, OAC and AoG, among others, serve children in Belgium.
b) Prayer movements. Stemming from the Flemish Evangelical Alliance, organic prayer movements such as Kniel/Breeze draw youth together to regularly pray and talk about God through websites, online forums and chats, local meetings and workshops. One movement, started (in 2005) and led by youth, now claims over 175 groups. Pray4Belgium is a website mobilizing prayer and connecting different Belgian prayer ministries.
c) Mobilization for mission. OM provides ongoing opportunities through Teens In Mission for Belgian youth to participate in mission and outreach. Missions Day conferences are generally held annually, hosted by WBT, SIM, Awake Ministries International, Eden Project and other related ministries. Pray for many young people to devote themselves to service among the Belgian peoples and even throughout the world.
