Chronological New Testament Study Day 16
Matthew 9:1-38; Matthew 10:1-42 (New
International Version)
1 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and
came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralytic,
lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the
paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." 3 At
this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is
blaspheming!" 4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus
said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which
is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and
walk'? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins . . ." Then he said to the
paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." 7 And
the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they
were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to
men.
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man
named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth."Follow
me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. 10 While
Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and
"sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When
the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher
eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12 On hearing
this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the
sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy,
not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
14 Then John's disciples came and asked him,
"How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not
fast?" 15 Jesus answered, "How can the guests
of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the
bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. 16"No
one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull
away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do
men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the
wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into
new wineskins, and both are preserved."
18 While he was saying this, a ruler came and
knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put
your hand on her, and she will live." 19 Jesus got up and
went with him, and so did his disciples. 20 Just then a woman
who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and
touched the edge of his cloak. 21 She said to herself,
"If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed." 22 Jesus
turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he
said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed
from that moment. 23 When Jesus entered the ruler's house and
saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, 24 he
said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they
laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he
went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. 26 News
of this spread through all that region.
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men
followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 28 When
he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked
them, "Do you believe that I am able to do
this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied. 29 Then
he touched their eyes and said,"According to your faith will it be done to
you"; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them
sternly, "See that no one knows about this." 31 But
they went out and spread the news about him all over that region. 32 While
they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was
brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the
man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like
this has ever been seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees
said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."
35 Jesus went through all the towns and
villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom
and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the
crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless,
like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his
disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask
the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest
field."
1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave
them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and
sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first,
Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and
his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew
the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the
Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve
Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the
Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to
the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message:
'The kingdom of heaven is near.'8 Heal the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received,
freely give. 9 Do not take along any gold or silver or copper
in your belts; 10 take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic,
or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep. 11 "Whatever
town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his
house until you leave.12 As you enter the home, give it your
greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on
it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone
will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when
you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the truth, it will
be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that
town. 16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.
Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 "Be
on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and
flog you in their synagogues. 18 On my account you will be
brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the
Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what
to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for
it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through
you. 21 "Brother will betray brother to death, and a
father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put
to death. 22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who
stands firm to the end will be saved. 23 When you are
persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not
finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 "A
student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It
is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his
master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members
of his household! 26 "So do not be afraid of them. There
is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be
made known. 27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight;
what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do
not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be
afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are
not two sparrows sold for a penny ? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground
apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs
of your head are all numbered. 31 So don't be afraid; you are
worth more than many sparrows. 32"Whoever acknowledges me
before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.33 But
whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in
heaven. 34 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring
peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For
I have come to turn " 'a man against his father, a daughter against her
mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- 36 a
man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' 37"Anyone
who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who
loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and
anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever
finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find
it. 40 "He who receives you receives me, and he who
receives me receives the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who
receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and
anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive
a righteous man's reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of
cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you
the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."

Peter Heals a Lame Beggar
1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
6 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
Peter Speaks to the Onlookers
11 While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade. 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.
17 "Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22 For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.'[a]
24 "Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets who have spoken have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, 'Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.'[b] 26 When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways."

The Beast out of the Sea
1 The dragon[a] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. 4 People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?"
5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.[b]
9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.
10 "If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[c] with the sword, with the sword they will be killed."[d] This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God's people.

It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[e] That number is 666.
