Chronological New Testament Study Day 28
Luke 16; Luke
17:1-10
1 Jesus told his disciples: "There was a
rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So
he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account
of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.' 3 "The
manager said to himself, 'What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job.
I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg-- 4 I
know what I'll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into
their houses.' 5"So he called in each one of his master's
debtors. He asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' 6 "
'Eight hundred gallons of olive oil,' he replied. "The manager told him,
'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.' 7 "Then
he asked the second, 'And how much do you owe?' " 'A thousand bushels of
wheat,' he replied. "He told him, 'Take your bill and make it eight
hundred.' 8"The master commended the dishonest manager because
he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing
with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell
you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is
gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 10 "Whoever
can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is
dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So
if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you
with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with
someone else's property, who will give you property of your own? 13 "No
servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other,
or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both
God and Money." 14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard
all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15 He said to them,
"You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows
your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.16 "The
Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news
of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into
it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for
the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law. 18 "Anyone
who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man
who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 19 "There
was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury
every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus,
covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the
rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 "The
time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side.
The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was
in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his
side. 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me
and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
because I am in agony in this fire.' 25 "But Abraham
replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things,
while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in
agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great
chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor
can anyone cross over from there to us.' 27 "He answered,
'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 for
I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to
this place of torment.' 29 "Abraham replied, 'They have
Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'30 " 'No,
father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will
repent.' 31"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses
and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the
dead.' "
1 Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that
cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they
come. 2 It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea
with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little
ones to sin. 3 So watch yourselves. "If your brother
sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. 4 If he sins
against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says,
'I repent,' forgive him." 5 The apostles said to the
LORD, "Increase our faith!" 6 He replied, "If
you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree,
'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you. 7"Suppose
one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to
the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to
eat'? 8 Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get
yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and
drink'? 9 Would he thank the servant because he did what he
was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything
you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done
our duty.' "

Final Warnings
1 This will be my third visit to you. "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."[a] 2 I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others, 3 since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. 4 For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God's power we will live with him in our dealing with you.
5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? 6 And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. 7 Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. 8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. 9 We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored. 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.
Final Greetings
11 Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All God's people here send their greetings.
14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Revelation 22
Eden Restored
1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
John and the Angel
6 The angel said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place."
7 "Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll."
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. 9 But he said to me, "Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!"
10 Then he told me, "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near. 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy."
Epilogue: Invitation and Warning 12 "Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
14 "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you[a] this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one who hears say, "Come!" Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.
20 He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen.
