The Preparation of Jesus for His Public Ministry Chapter 3 and Chapter 4:1-13)
Luke 3 NLT
1 It was now the fifteenth year of the
reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea;
Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea
and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene.
2 Annas and Caiaphas were the high
priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was
living in the wilderness.
3 Then John went from place to place on
both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to
show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
4 Isaiah had spoken of John when he said,
“He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the LORD ’s
coming! Clear the road for him!
5 The valleys will be filled, and the
mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough
places made smooth.
6 And then all people will see the
salvation sent from God.’”
7 When the crowds came to John for
baptism, he said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God’s coming
wrath?
8Prove by the way you live that you have
repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re
safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you,
God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.
9 Even now the ax of God’s judgment is
poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not
produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”
10 The crowds asked, “What should we do?”
11 John replied, “If you have two shirts,
give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
12 Even corrupt tax collectors came to be
baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?”
13 He replied, “Collect no more taxes than
the government requires.”
14 “What should we do?” asked some
soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be
content with your pay.”
15 Everyone was expecting the Messiah to
come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah.
16 John answered their questions by saying,
“I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I
am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the
straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
17 He is ready to separate the chaff from
the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area,
gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending
fire.”
18 John used many such warnings as he
announced the Good News to the people.
19 John also publicly criticized Herod
Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and
for many other wrongs he had done.
20 So Herod put John in prison, adding this
sin to his many others.
21One day when the crowds were being baptized,
Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form,
descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly
loved Son, and you bring me great joy. ”

Luke 4 NLT
1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,
returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
2 where he was tempted by the devil for
forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
3 Then the devil said to him, “If you are
the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures
say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’ ”
5 Then the devil took him up and revealed
to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 “I will give you the glory of these
kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to
give to anyone I please.
7 I will give it all to you if you will
worship me.”
8 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You
must worship the your God and serve only him.’ ”
9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to
the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump
off!
10 For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order
his angels to protect and guard you.
11 And they will hold you up with their
hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ”
12 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also
say, ‘You must not test the your God.’ ”
13 When the devil had finished tempting
Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.
Psalm 71
Psalm 71 (New International Version)
Psalm 71
1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.
2 Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me.
3 Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men.
5 For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth.
6 From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you.
7 I have become like a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long.
9 Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone.
10 For my enemies speak against me; those who wait to kill me conspire together.
11 They say, "God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him, for no one will rescue him."
12 Be not far from me, O God; come quickly, O my God, to help me.
13 May my accusers perish in shame; may those who want to harm me be covered with scorn and disgrace.
14 But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.
15 My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure.
16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign LORD; I will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.
17 Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.
18 Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.
19 Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, you who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you?
20 Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.
21 You will increase my honor and comfort me once again.
22 I will praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God; I will sing praise to you with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I, whom you have redeemed.
24 My tongue will tell of your righteous acts all day long, for those who wanted to harm me have been put to shame and confusion.

Revelation 3
To the Church in Sardis
1 "To the angel[a] of the church in Sardis write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[b] of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Philadelphia 7 "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. 12 The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Laodicea 14 "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. 21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
