Challenges for Prayer
Protestantism has had mixed fortunes – over the last 40 years, evangelicalism grew while mainline Protestantism declined. The growth of evangelical, and especially Pentecostal, groups as well as the evangelical wing of the largely liberal United Protestant Church (EPUB) has offset the decline in the mainline Protestantism. For prayer:a) The national body ARPEE/CACPE has, since 2003, represented before the government the various Protestant and evangelical denominations, giving them a unified voice in society, legal legitimacy (to avoid the “sect/cult” label) and equal access to government subsidies.
b) The strengthening of fellowship and ministry links among denominations. The Evangelische Alliantie was formed in Flanders in 1980, the Fédération Evangélique in Wallonia in 1989. They formed in 1998 a national evangelical synod. Together with EPUB, they represent most Protestants and evangelicals before the government under the ARPEE/CACPE.
The Bible has been reintroduced to Belgian society after many centuries of being discouraged, even banned, by the Catholic Church before 1960. UBS unveiled a new translation of the Bible in 2004, leading to a year-long promotional tour in 2006. A Bible multimedia exhibit, Expo Biblia, united the Flemish and French Bible Societies in efforts to reintroduce to Belgians the history and stories of the Bible. BEM also has portable multimedia Bible exhibits open to the public in French- and Flemish-speaking regions. Pray that the Word of God might take root deeply within the fabric of Belgian society.
