Challenges for Prayer

Azerbaijani believers continue to increase in number, although most Christians (at least in name) are still of foreign ethnicities. The majority of believers are in Baku, where there are many Azeri-led and Azeri-language congregations. Pray for the maturing of upcoming Azeri leaders and for good fellowship among believers. Cooperation and discipleship/training ministries are key needs. There are a handful of small Bible schools in Baku, most under threat of closure. Unregistered house church networks are spreading. They possess a vision to reach every town and village in the nation. Pray for a strong Church with an effective witness to non-Christians.
The Church faces intensifying opposition, even as it grows. Many churches find intimidation, surveillance and obstructionist tactics increasingly common. Despite these, there is relative freedom to share the gospel sensitively – many Azeris are Muslim out of cultural affiliation rather than deliberate choice. Pray that Christian witness to the majority Muslim population may be with humility, wisdom and love.
