Luke 22; John 13
1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover,
was approaching, 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of
the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of
the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one
of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the
officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray
Jesus. 5They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He
consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no
crowd was present. 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on
which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent
Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the
Passover." 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for
it?" they asked. 10He replied, "As you enter the city, a
man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he
enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher
asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my
disciples?' 12 He will show you a large upper room, all
furnished. Make preparations there." 13 They left and
found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. 14 When
the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15And
he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you
before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again
until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." 17 After
taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among
you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of
the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 19 And he took
bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my
body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." 20 In
the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the
new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But
the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22The
Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays
him." 23 They began to question among themselves which of
them it might be who would do this. 24 Also a dispute arose
among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus
said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who
exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.26 But you
are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the
youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For
who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not
the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You
are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer
on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones,
judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 "Simon, Simon,
Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for
you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen
your brothers." 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready
to go with you to prison and to death." 34 Jesus
answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will
deny three times that you know me." 35 Then Jesus asked
them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack
anything?" "Nothing," they answered. 36 He said
to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you
don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is
written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this
must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its
fulfillment." 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord,
here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. 39 Jesus
went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.40 On
reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into
temptation." 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond
them, knelt down and prayed, 42 "Father, if you are
willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43 An
angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And
being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of
blood falling to the ground. 45 When he rose from prayer and
went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 "Why
are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation." 47 While he was still speaking
a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was
leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus
asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a
kiss?" 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to
happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" 50 And
one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right
ear. 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And
he touched the man's ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to
the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had
come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords
and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,
and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness
reigns." 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took
him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 But
when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down
together, Peter sat down with them. 56A servant girl saw him seated
there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was
with him." 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know
him," he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and
said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter
replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted,
"Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." 60 Peter
replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he
was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and
looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to
him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three
times." 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. 63The
men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They
blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" 65 And
they said many other insulting things to him. 66 At daybreak
the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of
the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 "If
you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered,
"If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I
asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son
of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." 70 They
all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are
right in saying I am." 71 Then they said, "Why do we
need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the
time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved
his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his
love. 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had
already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus
knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come
from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the
meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After
that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet,
drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He
came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my
feet?" 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what
I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 "No,"
said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered,
"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." 9 "Then,
Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my
head as well!" 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has
had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are
clean, though not every one of you." 11 For he knew who
was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was
clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on
his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done
for you?" he asked them. 13 "You call me 'Teacher'
and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that
I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one
another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should
do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant
is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent
him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if
you do them. 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know
those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my
bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19 "I am
telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe
that I am He. 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone
I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent
me." 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in
spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray
me." 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to
know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom
Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter
motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he
means." 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him,
"Lord, who is it?"26 Jesus answered, "It is the one
to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the
dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son
of Simon. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered
into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,28 but
no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since
Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what
was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30 As
soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. 31When
he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is
glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will
glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 "My
children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and
just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot
come. 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As
I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all
men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." 36 Simon
Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied,
"Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow
later." 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow
you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38 Then Jesus
answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the
truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

Hebrews 8
The High Priest of a New Covenant
1 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.
3 Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. 4 If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5 They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."[a] 6 But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.
7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said[b]: "The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the Lord,'
because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."[c]
13 By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

The Thousand Years
1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They[a] had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
The Judgment of Satan
7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God's people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
The Judgment of the Dead
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what
was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30 As
soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. 31When
he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is
glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will
glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 "My
children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and
just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot
come. 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As
I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all
men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." 36 Simon
Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied,

Melchizedek the Priest
1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means "king of righteousness"; then also, "king of Salem" means "king of peace." 3 Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.
4 Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5 Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. 6 This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8 In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9 One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.
Jesus Like Melchizedek
11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared:
"You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."[a]
18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: 'You are a priest forever.'"[b]
22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.
23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely[c] those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon's Fall
1 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:
"Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
2 for true and just are his judgments.
He has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants."
3 And again they shouted: "Hallelujah!
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever."
4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried: "Amen, Hallelujah!"
5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying: "Praise our God, all you his servants,
you who fear him, both great and small!"
6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear." (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God's holy people.)
9 Then the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!" And he added, "These are the true words of God."
10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus."
The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter."[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, "Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small."
19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21 The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

1 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a] and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites,[b] the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.
4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen[c] away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
The Certainty of God's Promise
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, "I will surely bless you and give you many descendants."[d] 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
"'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!'[a] She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.
3 For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries.
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries."
Warning to Escape Babylon's Judgment
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
"'Come out of her, my people,'[b] so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;
5 for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.
6 Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup.
7 Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself.
In her heart she boasts, 'I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c] I will never mourn.'
8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

11 "The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore— 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.
14 "They will say, 'The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.' 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn 16 and cry out: "'Woe! Woe to you, great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!
17 In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!' "Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off. 18 When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, 'Was there ever a city like this great city?' 19 They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: "'Woe! 1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father."[a]
6 And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."[b]
7 During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Warning Against Falling Away
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Babylon, the Prostitute on the Beast
1 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits by many waters. 2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."
3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. 5 The name written on her forehead was a mystery: BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God's holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. 7 Then the angel said to me: "Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns. 8 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss and go to its destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.
9 "This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.
12 "The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers."
15 Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages. 16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority, until God's words are fulfilled. 18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth."

1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said
to his disciples, 2 "As you know, the Passover is two
days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." 3 Then
the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the
high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they plotted to
arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him. 5 "But not
during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the
people." 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a
man known as Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an
alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was
reclining at the table. 8 When the disciples saw this, they
were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9 "This
perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the
poor." 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why
are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The
poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 When
she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 I
tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what
she has done will also be told, in memory of her." 14 Then
one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief
priests 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if
I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver
coins. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to
hand him over. 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened
Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to
make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" 18 He
replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher
says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my
disciples at your house.' " 19 So the disciples did as
Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. 20 When
evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve.21 And
while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will
betray me." 22 They were very sad and began to say to him
one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" 23 Jesus
replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will
betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written
about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better
for him if he had not been born." 25 Then Judas, the one
who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered,
"Yes, it is you." 26 While they were eating, Jesus
took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,
"Take and eat; this is my body." 27 Then he took the
cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of
you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out
for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will
not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it
anew with you in my Father's kingdom." 30 When they had
sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then
Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me,
for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the
flock will be scattered.' 32 But after I have risen, I will go
ahead of you into Galilee." 33 Peter replied, "Even
if all fall away on account of you, I never will." 34 "I
tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the
rooster crows, you will disown me three times." 35 But
Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown
you." And all the other disciples said the same. 36 Then
Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to
them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37 He
took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be
sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul
is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with
me." 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to
the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be
taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." 40Then he
returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep
watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41 "Watch
and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but
the body is weak." 42 He went away a second time and
prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away
unless I drink it, may your will be done." 43 When he
came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So
he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same
thing. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them,
"Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son
of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us
go! Here comes my betrayer!" 47 While he was still
speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed
with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the
people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them:
"The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." 49 Going at
once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. 50 Jesus
replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped
forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of
Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of
the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52 "Put your sword
back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword
will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my
Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of
angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that
say it must happen in this way?" 55 At that time Jesus
said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with
swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,
and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place
that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the
disciples deserted him and fled. 57 Those who had arrested
Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and
the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a
distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down
with the guards to see the outcome. 59 The chief priests and
the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they
could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many
false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61and
declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and
rebuild it in three days.' "62 Then the high priest stood up
and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony
that these men are bringing against you?" 63 But Jesus
remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by
the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64"Yes,
it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the
future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One
and coming on the clouds of heaven." 65 Then the high
priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need
any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What
do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. 67 Then
they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and
said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" 69 Now
Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him.
"You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. 70 But
he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking
about," he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway,
where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was
with Jesus of Nazareth." 72 He denied it again, with an
oath: "I don't know the man!" 73 After a little
while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one
of them, for your accent gives you away." 74 Then he
began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know
the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter
remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will
disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
