Matthew 27; Mark 15
1 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders
of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death. 2 They
bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor. 3 When
Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with
remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the
elders. 4 "I have sinned," he said, "for I have
betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied.
"That's your responsibility." 5 So Judas threw the
money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. 6 The
chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put
this into the treasury, since it is blood money."7 So they
decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for
foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of
Blood to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the
prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set
on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy
the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me." 11 Meanwhile
Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the
king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. 12 When
he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then
Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against
you?" 14 But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single
charge--to the great amazement of the governor. 15 Now it was
the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the
crowd. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called
Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked
them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who
is called Christ?" 18 For he knew it was out of envy that
they had handed Jesus over to him. 19 While Pilate was sitting
on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to
do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream
because of him." 20 But the chief priests and the elders
persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. 21 "Which
of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor.
"Barabbas," they answered. 22 "What shall I do,
then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered,
"Crucify him!" 23 "Why? What crime has he
committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" 24 When
Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was
starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am
innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your
responsibility!" 25 All the people answered, "Let
his blood be on us and on our children!" 26 Then he
released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be
crucified. 27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the
Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They
stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then
twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in
his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of
the Jews!" they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the
staff and struck him on the head again and again.31 After they had
mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they
led him away to crucify him. 32 As they were going out, they
met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the
cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means
The Place of the Skull). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to
drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When
they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And
sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his
head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE
JEWS. 38 Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right
and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at
him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, "You who are
going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself ! Come
down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!" 41 In the
same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked
him. 42 "He saved others," they said, "but he
can't save himself ! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the
cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let
God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'
" 44 In the same way the robbers who were crucified with
him also heaped insults on him. 45 From the sixth hour until
the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46 About the
ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ""Eloi, Eloi,"
"lama" "sabachthani?""--which means, "My God, my
God, why have you forsaken me?" 47 When some of those
standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah." 48 Immediately
one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a
stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said,
"Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him." 50 And
when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At
that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The
earth shook and the rocks split. 52 The tombs broke open and
the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They
came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy
city and appeared to many people. 54 When the centurion and
those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had
happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of
God!" 55 Many women were there, watching from a distance.
They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among
them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of
Zebedee's sons. 57 As evening approached, there came a rich
man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of
Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and
Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the
body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in
his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in
front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary
Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. 62 The
next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees
went to Pilate. 63 "Sir," they said, "we
remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I
will rise again.' 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made
secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the
body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last
deception will be worse than the first." 65 "Take a
guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know
how." 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting
a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. 2 "Are
you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you
say," Jesus replied. 3 The chief priests accused him of
many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you
going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." 5 But
Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. 6 Now it was
the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A
man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed
murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate
to do for them what he usually did. 9 "Do you want me to
release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, 10 knowing
it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But
the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas
instead. 12 "What shall I do, then, with the one you call
the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them. 13 "Crucify
him!" they shouted. 14 "Why? What crime has he
committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify
him!" 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released
Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be
crucified. 16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace
(that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of
soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted
together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they
began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" 19 Again
and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on
their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had
mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then
they led him out to crucify him. 21A certain man from Cyrene,
Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the
country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They
brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the
Skull). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he
did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his
clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. 25 It was
the third hour when they crucified him. 26 The written notice
of the charge against him read: the king of the jews. 27 They
crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. 29 Those
who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So!
You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come
down from the cross and save yourself !" 31 In the same
way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves.
"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself ! 32 Let
this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see
and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. 33 At

the Son of God!" 40 Some women were watching from a
distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger
and of Joses, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had
followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him
to Jerusalem were also there. 42 It was Preparation Day (that
is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph
of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for
the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. 44 Pilate
was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he
asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from
the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So
Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen,
and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the
entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of
Joses saw where he was laid.

2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he[b] predestined us for adoption to sonship[c] through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he[d] made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
11 In him we were also chosen,[e] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God's people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[f] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

The Throne in Heaven
1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this." 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits[a] of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,'[b] who was, and is, and is to come."
9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
11 "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."

Ephesians 6

Ephesians 6
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."[a]
4 Fathers,[b] do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Final Greetings
21 Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
23 Peace to the brothers and sisters,[c] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

To the Church in Sardis
1 "To the angel[a] of the church in Sardis write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[b] of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Philadelphia 7 "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. 12 The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. know the way to the place where I am going." 5 Thomas
said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know
the way?" 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the
truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If
you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know
him and have seen him." 8 Philip said, "Lord, show
us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus
answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you
such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say,
'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the
Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my
own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.11 Believe
me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least
believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell
you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He
will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And
I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the
Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will
do it. 15 "If you love me, you will obey what I
command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Counselor to be with you forever-- 17 the Spirit of
truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.
But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I
will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before
long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live,
you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am
in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever
has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me
will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to
him." 22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But,
Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the
world?" 23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he
will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and
make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not
obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the
Father who sent me. 25 "All this I have spoken while
still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom
the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you
of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 "You heard me
say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would
be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I
have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will
believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the
prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31 but
the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my
Father has commanded me. "Come now; let us leave.
1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the
gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no
fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be
even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the
word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain
in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither
can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 "I am the
vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear
much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does
not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such
branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If
you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will
be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear
much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 "As
the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If
you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my

this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My
command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater
love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You
are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call
you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I
have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have
made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father
will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17 This is my
command: Love each other. 18 "If the world hates you,
keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the
world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world,
but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember
the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they
persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they
will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because
of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. 22 If I
had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however,
they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates me hates my
Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them what no one
else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles,
and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is
to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.' 26 "When
the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of
truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. 27 And
you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go
astray. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a
time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to
God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known
the Father or me. 4 I have told you this, so that when the
time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at
first because I was with you.5 "Now I am going to him who sent
me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6 Because
I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7 But I
tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away,
the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When
he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness
and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in
me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the
Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to
judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. 12 "I
have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.13 But
when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will
not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you
what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking
from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that
belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from
what is mine and make it known to you. 16 "In a little
while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see
me." 17 Some of his disciples said to one another,
"What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more,
and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the
Father'?" 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by
'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." 19 Jesus
saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you
asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me
no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? 20 I
tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will
grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving
birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born
she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the
world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will
see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In
that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father
will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you
have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy
will be complete. 25 "Though I have been speaking
figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language
but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you
will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your
behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have
loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came
from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going
back to the Father." 29 Then Jesus' disciples said,
"Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now
we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have
anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from
God." 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus
answered. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when
you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I
am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 "I have told
you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have
trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify
you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he
might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now
this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on
earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now,
Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the
world began. 6 "I have revealed you to those whom you
gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have
obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have
given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave
me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and

3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a] 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Instructions for Christian Households
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."[c] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
To the Church in Smyrna 8 "To the angel of the church in Smyrna write:
These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. 9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor's crown. 11 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor's crown. 11 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.
To the Church in Pergamum 12 "To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives. 14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
To the Church in Thyatira 18 "To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:
These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. 20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets, 'I will not impose any other burden on you, 25 except to hold on to what you have until I come.' 26 To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— 27 that one 'will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery'[b]—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star. 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover,
was approaching, 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of
the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of
the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one
of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the
officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray
Jesus. 5They were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He
consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no
crowd was present. 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on
which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent
Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the
Passover." 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for
it?" they asked. 10He replied, "As you enter the city, a
man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he
enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher
asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my
disciples?' 12 He will show you a large upper room, all
furnished. Make preparations there." 13 They left and
found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. 14 When
the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15And
he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you
before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again
until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." 17 After
taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among
you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of
the vine until the kingdom of God comes." 19 And he took
bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my
body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." 20 In
the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the
new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But
the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22The
Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays
him." 23 They began to question among themselves which of
them it might be who would do this. 24 Also a dispute arose
among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus
said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who
exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.26 But you
are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the
youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For
who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not
the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You
are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer
on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones,
judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 "Simon, Simon,
Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for
you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen
your brothers." 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready
to go with you to prison and to death." 34 Jesus
answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will
deny three times that you know me." 35 Then Jesus asked
them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack
anything?" "Nothing," they answered. 36 He said
to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you
don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is
written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this
must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its
fulfillment." 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord,
here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. 39 Jesus
went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.40 On
reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into
temptation." 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond
them, knelt down and prayed, 42 "Father, if you are
willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43 An
angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And
being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of
blood falling to the ground. 45 When he rose from prayer and
went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 "Why
are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation." 47 While he was still speaking
a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was
leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus
asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a
kiss?" 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to
happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" 50 And
one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right
ear. 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And
he touched the man's ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to
the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had
come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords
and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,
and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness
reigns." 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took
him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 But
when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down
together, Peter sat down with them. 56A servant girl saw him seated
there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was
with him." 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know
him," he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and
said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter
replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted,
"Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." 60 Peter
replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he
was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and
looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to
him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three
times." 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. 63The
men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They
blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" 65 And
they said many other insulting things to him. 66 At daybreak
the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of
the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 "If
you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered,
"If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I
asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son
of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." 70 They
all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are
right in saying I am." 71 Then they said, "Why do we
need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the
time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved
his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his
love. 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had
already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus
knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come
from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the
meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After
that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet,
drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He
came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my
feet?" 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what
I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 "No,"
said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered,
"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." 9 "Then,
Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my
head as well!" 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has
had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are
clean, though not every one of you." 11 For he knew who
was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was
clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on
his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done
for you?" he asked them. 13 "You call me 'Teacher'
and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that
I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one
another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should
do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant
is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent
him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if
you do them. 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know
those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my
bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19 "I am
telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe
that I am He. 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone
I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent
me." 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in
spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray
me." 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to
know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom
Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter
motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he
means." 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him,
"Lord, who is it?"26 Jesus answered, "It is the one
to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the
dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son
of Simon. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered
into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,28 but
no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since
Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what
was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30 As
soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. 31When
he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is
glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will
glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 "My
children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and
just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot
come. 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As
I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all
men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." 36 Simon
Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied,
"Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow
later." 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow
you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38 Then Jesus
answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the
truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
