1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the
reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his attendants,
"This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why
miraculous powers are at work in him." 3 Now Herod had
arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his
brother Philip's wife, 4 for John had been saying to him:
"It is not lawful for you to have her." 5 Herod
wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered
him a prophet. 6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias
danced for them and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised
with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her
mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the
Baptist." 9 The king was distressed, but because of his
oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and
had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on
a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.12 John's
disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he
withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds
followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and
saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As
evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote
place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to
the villages and buy themselves some food." 16 Jesus
replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to
eat." 17 "We have here only five loaves of bread and
two fish," they answered. 18 "Bring them here to
me," he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit
down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to
heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the
disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20They all
ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken
pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was
about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into
the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the
crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a
mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but
the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves
because the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of
the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When
the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a
ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus
immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be
afraid." 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied,
"tell me to come to you on the water." 29 "Come," he
said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward
Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Immediately
Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little
faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" 32 And
when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then
those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son
of God." 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at
Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized
Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their
sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the
edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,
accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he
began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
"Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this
wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! 3 Isn't
this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph,
Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense
at him. 4 Jesus said to them,"Only in his hometown, among
his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." 5 He
could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and
heal them.
6 And he was amazed at their lack of faith. Then
Jesus went around teaching from village to village.7 Calling the
Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil
spirits. 8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for
the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear
sandals but not an extra tunic. 10 Whenever you enter a house,
stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will
not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave,
as a testimony against them." 12 They went out and
preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many
demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name
had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised
from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in
him." 15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still
others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long
ago." 16 But when Herod heard this, he said, "John,
the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!" 17 For
Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and
put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom
he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, "It
is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." 19 So
Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not
able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him,
knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was
greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him. 21 Finally the
opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high
officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 When
the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner
guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll
give it to you." 23 And he promised her with an oath,
"Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom." 24 She
went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The
head of John the Baptist," she answered. 25 At once the
girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right
now the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 26 The
king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he
did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an
executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in
the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He
presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On
hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and
reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because
so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to
eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place
and get some rest." 32 So they went away by themselves in
a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving
recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of
them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had
compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he
began teaching them many things. 35 By this time it was late
in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place,"
they said, "and it's already very late. 36 Send the
people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy
themselves something to eat." 37 But he
answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to
him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages ! Are we to go and
spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" 38 "How
many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and
see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two
fish." 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people
sit down in groups on the green grass. 40So they sat down in groups
of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two
fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he
gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two
fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied,43 and
the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and
fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five
thousand.
45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into
the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the
crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to
pray. 47When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake,
and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at
the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the
night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by
them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they
thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all
saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and
said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." 51Then
he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were
completely amazed, 52for they had not understood about the loaves;
their hearts were hardened. 53 When they had crossed over,
they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as
they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran
throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they
heard he was. 56 And wherever he went--into villages, towns or
countryside--they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let
them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.

gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure
diseases, 2 and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God
and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: "Take nothing

house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If
people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their
town, as a testimony against them." 6 So they set out and
went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people
everywhere. 7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was
going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been
raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and
still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9 But
Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things
about?" And he tried to see him.
10 When the apostles returned, they reported to
Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by
themselves to a town called Bethsaida, 11 but the crowds
learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the
kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. 12 Late
in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so
they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and
lodging, because we are in a remote place here." 13 He
replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered,
"We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food
for all this crowd." 14 (About five thousand men were
there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups
of about fifty each." 15 The disciples did so, and
everybody sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish
and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to
the disciples to set before the people. 17 They all ate and
were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces
that were left over.

Revelation 14
The Lamb and the 144,000
1 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb. 5 No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.
The Three Angels
6 Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. 7 He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water."
8 A second angel followed and said, "'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,'[a] which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries."
9 A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name." 12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.
13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on." "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them."
Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress
14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man[b] with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, "Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe." 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.
17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, "Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth's vine, because its grapes are ripe." 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God's wrath. 20 They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses' bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.

The Lamb and the 144,000

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.
5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest's family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?"
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.'[a]
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."
13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name."
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, "Which is right in God's eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers Pray
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:
"'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed one.[b]'[c]
27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God's grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means "son of encouragement"), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

Chronological New Testament Study Day 16
Matthew 9:1-38; Matthew 10:1-42 (New

1 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and
came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralytic,
lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the
paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." 3 At
this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is
blaspheming!" 4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus
said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which
is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and
walk'? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins . . ." Then he said to the
paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." 7 And
the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they
were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to
men.
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man
named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth."Follow
me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. 10 While
Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and
"sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When
the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher
eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12 On hearing
this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the
sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy,
not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
14 Then John's disciples came and asked him,
"How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not
fast?" 15 Jesus answered, "How can the guests
of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the
bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. 16"No
one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull
away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do
men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the
wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into
new wineskins, and both are preserved."
18 While he was saying this, a ruler came and
knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put
your hand on her, and she will live." 19 Jesus got up and
went with him, and so did his disciples. 20 Just then a woman
who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and
touched the edge of his cloak. 21 She said to herself,
"If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed." 22 Jesus
turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he
said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed
from that moment. 23 When Jesus entered the ruler's house and
saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, 24 he
said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they
laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he
went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. 26 News
of this spread through all that region.
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men
followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 28 When
he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked
them, "Do you believe that I am able to do
this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied. 29 Then
he touched their eyes and said,"According to your faith will it be done to
you"; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them
sternly, "See that no one knows about this." 31 But
they went out and spread the news about him all over that region. 32 While
they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was
brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the
man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like
this has ever been seen in Israel." 34 But the Pharisees
said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."
35 Jesus went through all the towns and
villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom
and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the
crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless,
like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his
disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask
the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest
field."
1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave
them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and
sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first,
Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and
his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew
the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the
Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve
Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the
Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to
the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message:
'The kingdom of heaven is near.'8 Heal the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received,
freely give. 9 Do not take along any gold or silver or copper
in your belts; 10 take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic,
or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep. 11 "Whatever
town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his
house until you leave.12 As you enter the home, give it your
greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on
it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone
will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when
you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the truth, it will
be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that
town. 16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.
Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 "Be
on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and
flog you in their synagogues. 18 On my account you will be
brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the
Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what
to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for
it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through
you. 21 "Brother will betray brother to death, and a
father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put
to death. 22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who
stands firm to the end will be saved. 23 When you are
persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not
finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 "A
student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It
is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his
master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members
of his household! 26 "So do not be afraid of them. There
is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be
made known. 27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight;
what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do

afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are

We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. The Beast out of the Sea
1 The dragon[a] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. 4 People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?"
5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.[b]
9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.
10 "If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[c] with the sword, with the sword they will be killed."[d] This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God's people.

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[e] That number is 666.

14 When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw
Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15He touched her
hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. 16 When
evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove
out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This
was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our
infirmities and carried our diseases."
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave
orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of
the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you
go." 20Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of
the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his
head." 21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first
let me go and bury my father." 22 But Jesus told
him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples
followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on
the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The
disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to
drown!" 26 He replied, "You of little faith,
why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the
waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and
asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey
him!"
28 When he arrived at the other side in the
region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him.
They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 "What
do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here
to torture us before the appointed time?" 30 Some
distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The
demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of
pigs." 32 He said to them, "Go!" So
they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep
bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the
pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had
happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town
went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave
their region.
1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The
crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in
it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's
edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his
teaching said: 3 "Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As
he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and
ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have
much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But
when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they
had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and
choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still
other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying
thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times." 9 Then Jesus
said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." 10 When
he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the
parables. 11 He told them, "The secret of the
kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is
said in parables 12 so that, " 'they may be ever seeing
but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they
might turn and be forgiven!' "13 Then Jesus said to
them, "Don't you understand this parable? How then will you
understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some
people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they
hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.16 Others,
like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with
joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short
time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall
away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the
word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of
wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it
unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the
word, accept it, and produce a crop--thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what
was sown."
21 He said to them, "Do you bring in a
lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don't you put it on its stand? 22 For
whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant
to be brought out into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to
hear, let him hear." 24 "Consider carefully what you
hear," he continued. "With the measure you use, it will be
measured to you--and even more. 25 Whoever has will be given
more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him."
26 He also said, "This is what the
kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27Night
and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he
does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces
grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As
soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has
come."
30 Again he said, "What shall we say
the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It
is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the
ground. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest
of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can
perch in its shade." 33 With many similar parables Jesus
spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He
did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone
with his own disciples, he explained everything.
35 That day when evening came, he said to his
disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." 36Leaving
the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were
also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and
the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus
was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to
him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39 He
got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves,"Quiet! Be
still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He
said to his disciples,"Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no
faith?" 41 They were terrified and asked each other,
"Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell
on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his
voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear
to God that you won't torture me!" 8 For Jesus had said
to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!" 9 Then
Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is
Legion," he replied, "for we are many." 10 And
he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. 11 A
large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The
demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into
them." 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits
came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed
down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. 14Those tending
the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people
went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus,
they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there,
dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.16 Those who
had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and
told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead
with Jesus to leave their region. 18As Jesus was getting into the
boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.19 Jesus
did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how
much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20 So
the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done
for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to
the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by
the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus,
came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet 23 and pleaded
earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your
hands on her so that she will be healed and live." 24 So
Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And
a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She
had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she
had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she
heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his
cloak, 28 because she thought, "If I just touch his
clothes, I will be healed." 29 Immediately her bleeding
stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At
once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the
crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" 31 "You
see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and
yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' " 32 But
Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the
woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and,
trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to
her,"Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from
your suffering." 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some
men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is
dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?" 36 Ignoring
what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid;
just believe." 37 He did not let anyone follow him except
Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came
to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying
and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to
them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but
asleep." 40 But they laughed at him. After he put them
all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with
him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the
hand and said to her, ""Talitha koum!"" (which
means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"). 42 Immediately
the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they
were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to
let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

It's only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
