Chronological New Testament Study Day 20
Matthew 16:1-28; Mark 8:1-38; Luke
9:18-27 (New International Version)
1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and
tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He
replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for
the sky is red,'3 and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for
the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the
sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A
wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be
given it except the sign of Jonah."Jesus then left them and went away.
5 When they went across the lake, the disciples
forgot to take bread. 6 "Be careful," Jesus
said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees
and Sadducees." 7 They discussed this among themselves
and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread." 8 Aware
of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you
talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still
not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and
how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for
the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How
is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on
your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 12 Then
they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in
bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man
is?" 14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist;
others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15 "But
what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" 16Simon
Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 Jesus
replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not
revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.18 And I tell
you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates
of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of
the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." 20 Then
he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to
his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands
of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be
killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took
him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This
shall never happen to you!" 23 Jesus turned and said to
Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do
not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." 24 Then
Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must
deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me
will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains
the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for
his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his
Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according
to what he has done. 28 I tell you the truth, some who are
standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his
kingdom."
1 During those days another large crowd
gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and
said, 2 "I have compassion for these people; they have
already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If
I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them
have come a long distance." 4 His disciples answered,
"But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed
them?" 5 "How many loaves do you have?"Jesus
asked. "Seven," they replied. 6 He told the crowd to
sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he
broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they
did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks
for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8 The
people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven
basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9 About four
thousand men were present. And having sent them away, 10 he
got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha. 11 The
Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a
sign from heaven. 12 He sighed deeply and said, "Why
does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign
will be given to it." 13 Then he left them, got back into
the boat and crossed to the other side.
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread,
except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15"Be
careful," Jesus warned them. "Watch out for the yeast of
the Pharisees and that of Herod." 16They discussed this with
one another and said, "It is because we have no bread." 17 Aware
of their discussion, Jesus asked them: "Why are you talking about
having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do
you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember? 19 When
I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces
did you pick up?" "Twelve," they replied. 20 "And
when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of
pieces did you pick up?" They answered, "Seven." 21He
said to them, "Do you still not understand?"
22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people
brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.23 He took the
blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the
man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, "Do you see
anything?" 24 He looked up and said, "I see people;
they look like trees walking around." 25 Once more Jesus
put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was
restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him
home, saying, "Don't go into the village. "
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the
villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do
people say I am?" 28 They replied, "Some say John
the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." 29 "But
what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"Peter
answered, "You are the Christ. " 30 Jesus warned
them not to tell anyone about him.
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of
Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and
teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise
again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him
aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and
looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me,
Satan!" he said."You do not have in mind the things of God, but
the things of men." 34 Then he called the crowd to him
along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me
and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for a man
to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37 Or what can
a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed
of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man
will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy
angels."

A psalm of Asaph.

3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
4 Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
5 "They know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 "I said, 'You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.'

27 "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' "
Chronological New Testament Study Day 19
Matthew 15:1-39; Mark 7:1-36 (New
International Version)
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law
came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 "Why do your
disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before
they eat!" 3Jesus replied, "And why do you break the
command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said,
'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must
be put to death.' 5 But you say that if a man says to his
father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a
gift devoted to God,' 6 he is not to 'honor his father ' with
it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You
hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 "
'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9They
worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'" 10 Jesus
called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. 11 What
goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his
mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' " 12 Then the
disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were
offended when they heard this?" 13He replied, "Every
plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14Leave
them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall
into a pit." 15 Peter said, "Explain the parable to
us." 16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus
asked them. 17 "Don't you see that whatever enters the
mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But
the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man
'unclean.' 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder,
adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These
are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him
'unclean.' "
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the
region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that
vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!
My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." 23 Jesus
did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send
her away, for she keeps crying out after us." 24 He
answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." 25 The
woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. 26He
replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to
their dogs." 27 "Yes, Lord," she said,
"but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters'
table." 28 Then Jesus answered,"Woman, you have
great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed
from that very hour.
29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of
Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great
crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and
many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31 The
people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the
lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. 32 Jesus
called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these
people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do
not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way." 33 His
disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place
to feed such a crowd?" 34 "How many loaves do you
have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few
small fish." 35 He told the crowd to sit down on the
ground. 36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he
had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in
turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied.
Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were
left over. 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand,
besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd
away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
1 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the
law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and 2 saw
some of his disciples eating food with hands that were "unclean,"
that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not
eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition
of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do
not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the
washing of cups, pitchers and kettles. ) 5 So the Pharisees
and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live
according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with
'unclean' hands?" 6 He replied, "Isaiah was
right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: " 'These
people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They
worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' 8 You
have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of
men." 9 And he said to them: "You have a fine
way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own
traditions! 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your
mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' 11 But
you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might
otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), 12 then
you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13Thus
you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And
you do many things like that." 14 Again Jesus called the
crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing
outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what
comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' " 17 After
he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this
parable. 18 "Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't
you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'? 19 For
it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his
body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.") 20 He
went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.' 21 For
from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft,
murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy,
slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from
inside and make a man 'unclean.' "
24 Jesus left that place and went to the
vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he
could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she
heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit
came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in
Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.27 "First
let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it
is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." 28 "Yes,
Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs under the table eat the
children's crumbs." 29 Then he told her, "For
such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter." 30 She
went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went
through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There
some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they
begged him to place his hand on the man. 33 After he took him
aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he
spit and touched the man's tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven
and with a deep sigh said to him, ""Ephphatha!"" (which
means,"Be opened!"). 35 At this, the man's ears were
opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus
commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept
talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement.
"He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the
deaf hear and the mute speak."

Psalm 81
For the director of music. According to gittith. Of Asaph. [a]
1 Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
2 Begin the music, strike the tambourine, play the melodious harp and lyre.
3 Sound the ram's horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our Feast;
4 this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5 He established it as a statute for Joseph when he went out against Egypt, where we heard a language we did not understand. [b]
6 He says, "I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket.
7 In your distress you called and I rescued you, I answered you out of a thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
8 "Hear, O my people, and I will warn you— if you would but listen to me, O Israel!
9 You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not bow down to an alien god.
10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.
11 "But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me.
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
13 "If my people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways,
14 how quickly would I subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes!
15 Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever.
16 But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

Chronological New Testament Study Day 18
John 6 (New International Version)
View In My BibleJesus Feeds the Five Thousand
6:1-13pp -- Mt 14:13-21; Mk 6:32-44; Lk 9:10-17
1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9 "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down."There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. 11Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.Jesus Walks on the Water
6:16-21pp -- Mt 14:22-33; Mk 6:47-51
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. 20But he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid." 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading. 22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?" 26 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." 30So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' " 32 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." 34 "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." 35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 41 At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42 They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" 43 "Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." 52 Then the Jewsbegan to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" 61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? 62 What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him." 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." 70 Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!" 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
