Indonesia’s vast diversity is both its strength and its peril. With 17,500 islands strewn across nearly 10 million sq km of ocean, 33 provinces, 722 languages, even more ethnic groups, myriad religious expressions and deeply divided political agendas, holding this nation together is a monumental task. Pray for political strength for the maturing democracy to stay balanced between national unity and regional identity. Pray also for the government to act with righteousness in honouring all peoples and communities; Indonesia’s history, especially recently, is characterized by discrimination, exploitation and favouritism.

Leadership training is a definite need as the Church grows, but illiteracy, poverty, geographic isolation and lack of indigenous Scriptures have all slowed development. There are a number of Bible schools. Pray for churches to mature and have a vision for outreach; pray also for expressions of Christian faith to be culturally resonant and appropriate.

Answer to Prayer

More recent developments in political, religious and Church scenes are causes for thanksgiving, even if not immediately obvious points for praise. These include:
a) The transition to true democracy, although still in a fragile state. The more moderate government has blunted the harsh excesses of the military and of theocratic Islamists. Democracy allows moderates and Christians to have a voice and to help shape Indonesia's future, without fear of reprisal.
b) The increasing openness of moderate Muslims repelled by the harsh extremism of Islamists. The strict legalism of Islam also makes Christianity more attractive to animists.
c) High levels of persecution have caused great suffering, but also greater unity among Christians and greater dependence on God.
d) The development of national structures that serve and build the Indonesian Church. These include the Indonesian Peoples Network (IPN), a burgeoning national prayer network, plus international networks having an impact in Indonesia through research, intercession and mission.

Sumba, an island long known for its animism and resistance to the gospel, saw a movement of the Spirit in the late 1980s, with Protestants doubling from 75,000 to 160,000 in five years. Isaiah 25

Praise to the LORD

1 O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago.
2 You have made the city a heap of rubble, the fortified town a ruin, the foreigners' stronghold a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.

3 Therefore strong peoples will honor you; cities of ruthless nations will revere you.

4 You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm driving against a wall

5 and like the heat of the desert. You silence the uproar of foreigners; as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud, so the song of the ruthless is stilled.

6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine— the best of meats and the finest of wines.

7 On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations;

8 he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The LORD has spoken.

Answer to Prayer

Praise God for the sustained growth of the Church over the last 50 years. During this period, evangelicals have grown from 1.3 million (1.4% of the population) to 13 million (5.6%). Several of the following have a long-lasting legacy.
a) Great people movements to Christ have occurred in many animistic peoples, among three of the eight Java sub-groups and among Indonesians of Chinese descent. Over 50% of the latter are now Christian.
b) The lives and vibrant witness of committed Christians have made an impact on a society influenced by the power of the occult and have offered many the path to freedom.
c) The government mandate that all citizens adhere to one of six recognized religions impels many animists to consider the claims of the gospel.
d) The development and use of Indonesian as the national language make sharing the gospel across geographic and ethnic boundaries easier in many areas of the country.

Challenge for Prayer

Unreached peoples include:
a) The Hindu Bali people – more than 100,000 on Lombok and probably more open to the gospel than on their home island.
b) The three major indigenous people groups remain largely unevangelized amidst ongoing efforts to reach them for the past 20 or more years, although greater responsiveness is also reported. They are: Muslim Sasak (2.75m) on Lombok, and Bima (650,000) and Sumbawa (400,000) on Sumbawa Island. There are less than 200 known believers among the Sasak, less than 100 among the Bima and less than 20 among the Sumbawa. All three groups are strongly Muslim but still adhere to animistic beliefs. Several second- and third-generation house fellowships have formed among the Bima and Sumbawa.

1 Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?
2 On the heights along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

Challenge for Prayer

Supportive ministries:
a) Bible translation. The Bible Society, Wycliffe and other groups are involved in 150 translation projects across the country. The rapid reduction in expatriate visas has severely hampered the progress on many translations. Pray for their speedy completion. Pray also for the Indonesian Bible translation agency, Kartidaya, and for the calling and training of many Indonesian translators. Despite the increasing use of Indonesian, this nation is one of the major unmet Bible-translation challenges in the world today, having 414 languages with definite or possible needs. The prevalence of an oral culture among many of Indonesia’s peoples means that Bible storying is important and in need of further development.
b) Literature. There is an insatiable appetite for good Christian literature, but too little is widely available at a price people can afford. Numerous Indonesian organizations and international missions have extensive printing and publishing ministries. Most are primarily focused on providing books and other resources for Christians and churches. Some are focused on outreach and evangelistic follow-up. Pray for the provision of literature to meet the need, especially literature written by Indonesians and more appropriate for the local context. An Indonesian New Testament, using religious terminology with which the majority of Indonesians are familiar, is proving very helpful in opening doors of understanding and in discipling new believers.
c) Missionary flying. This is a boon to Christian workers in this huge, rugged island nation, but it is costly and dangerous. Indonesia is MAF’s greatest global effort with 22 aircraft, including floatplanes, serving isolated villages. Missionary work in some areas of Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua would be nearly impossible without it. WT, HeliMission, Adventist Aviation and others also have flying programmes. Pray for the staff and for the safety of the planes.
d) The JESUS film is completed in 38 languages. Pray for wisdom to decide which of the hundreds of smaller remaining languages should be translated, as well as for qualified translators. Pray that small groups of new believers will form as a result of viewing the film.
e) Practical ministries. In the last few years, programmes for community development, health, education and relief have grown. These all provide opportunities for sharing the gospel. Agencies include WVI, Christian Reformed World Relief, AMG, YWAM, Tearfund and many others.
f) Christian radio. With dense rainforests separating rural communities and a shortage of pastors, radio is an imperative method for reaching and discipling Indonesians. Up to 50% of the population listen to religious programmes at least once a week. Praise God for the work of TWR, whose programmes are broadcast over 121 stations, AM and FM. FEBC trains hundreds of new broadcasters to share the good news and reaches out to those in emergency situations.
g) Audio ministry. Over 518 languages and dialects are now recorded; the goal of GRN is 560. The widespread use of Indonesian makes many insensitive to the need for the gospel in the heart language of the people. Languages with audio Scriptures: 20Bi 38NT 77por. Pray for more helpers to get the recordings into the hands of those who need to hear the gospel in their heart language.
h) New media. With a young population and burgeoning modernization and urbanization, effective use of media such as the Internet, TV and mobile phones is essential for Kingdom purposes.

The cost of discipleship is high, and converts to Christ often face ostracism, persecution and financial loss – even the loss of inheritance and land ownership rights – when they break with their family and community’s way of life. The LORD's Devastation of the Earth

1 See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants-
2 it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.

3 The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word.

4 The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish.

5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant.

6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.

7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan.

8 The gaiety of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent.

Warnings Against Folly

1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another,
2 if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth,

3 then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor!

4 Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.

5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!

7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,

8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-

11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. [a]

12 A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth,

13 who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers,

Warning Against Adultery

20 My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck.

22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.

23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,

24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.

25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes,

26 for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life.

27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?

28 Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?

29 So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.

30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.

31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.

32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself.

33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away;

34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.

35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.
