Challenge for Prayer

The “New India” is a youthful, ambitious, cosmopolitan and modern entity, where differences of religion, caste and gender mean less and less. It is increasingly urban and tech-savvy. The India of call centres, cricket, Bollywood, bhangra and globally connected Indian culture is exposed to and open to new ideas and ways of living, including Christianity. The most significant influence in this context is materialism – as capable of entrapping Hindus as any other group. This younger generation – 70% of India is under age 35, and 31% under age 15 – will shape India’s future. As such, they are a hugely strategic group to reach for Jesus; completely new and different missiological strategies must be undertaken to communicate and model the gospel to them. Indian churches and missions are now focusing on this issue; initial success thus far is very modest.

Challenge for Prayer

Kerala has a diverse Christian scene. A multitude of ministries and denominations are based in or operate in this state, which comfortably has more Christians than any other state in India. The longstanding investment of Christians into the educational system has rendered Kerala the most literate and well-educated state in India as well as the most favourable for the status of women. Protestants include mainline, Brethren and Pentecostal groups, as well as burgeoning numbers of fast-growing Independent groups, usually from a charismatic background. There is notable tension between traditional mainline groups and emerging groups; theology, style of worship, caste-related issues and style of evangelism are all areas of significant differences. Pray for unity and sensitivity among churches, their shared commitment to have a good testimony to society and for God’s Kingdom to be placed ahead of their own interests.

Challenge for Prayer

Christian numbers declined in census statistics, from 0.92% in 1981 to 0.3% in 1991, but this refers only to the established mainline groups and does not take into account the accelerating grassroots growth occurring, especially through house church networks. A statewide saturation, church-planting network has seen thousands of groups planted in the last 20 years; there are now more than 4,000. The vision of the Madhya Pradesh Harvest network is to place workers in every Pincode – more than half now have some Christian workers. Rather than pick from each other’s flocks, mainline denominations instead agreed to cooperate. Pray that unity might increase and be the platform for outreach and effective ministry to this spiritually needy state.

      A Prophecy Against Babylon

      1 An oracle concerning Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw:
      2 Raise a banner on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates of the nobles.

      3 I have commanded my holy ones; I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath— those who rejoice in my triumph.

      4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty is mustering an army for war.

      5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens— the LORD and the weapons of his wrath— to destroy the whole country.

      6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. [a]

      Challenge for Prayer

      Political, economic and social challenges to the country place a great burden upon India’s government. Much positive progress has been made in many areas; to consolidate and build on such progress, prayer is called for. Pray for India’s leaders, that they might:
      a) Continue to uphold the constitution by maintaining religious freedom and protecting religious and ethnic minorities. Religious freedom and affirmative action provisions in the constitution have recently come under threat. Some state governments have a poor record for abuse of human rights and discrimination against Christians, Muslims and Dalits; several states have passed anti-conversion laws that, among other things, deny state benefits to low-caste people who become Christian.
      b) Uproot corruption in all levels of government – from national to state levels and right down to the local level. Mass media is a powerful means of exposing corruption, and the Right to Information Act forces government staff to be more accountable. With 100 of the 543 members of Parliament having criminal cases pending against them in 2010, clearly the system needs transparency. Pray for courage and resoluteness to stay the course when allowing a culture of corruption to persist is a much easier and safer option.
      c) Tackle the serious ills of society with greater commitment and effectiveness – reduce malnutrition, which affects 40% of the population; improve the national infrastructure; deal with widespread use of child labour, bonded labour and female infanticide; tackle the rapid spread of AIDS and serious environmental degradation.
      d) Address the growing threat of Maoist/Naxalite insurgency. The stretch of rural India from Nepal down to Andra Pradesh is known as the Red Corridor. These movements threaten stability and security, both locally and regionally. They also threaten the healthy growth of the Church through Naxalite infiltration of Christian communities and the general disruption caused by violence.
      e) Manage the economic situation with wisdom. India has the world’s highest number of poor, the fourth-most millionaires and the greatest disparity between rich and poor. Millions enter the workforce every year; millions of jobs must be created to sustain them. Amid a growing economy and a growing middle class, ways to reduce poverty must also be found.
      f) Wisely address increasing threats to stability, including terrorism, tensions with neighbouring countries, and Hindu nationalist groups and their targets: Christians, Muslims and Naxalites/Communists.

      Jharkhand

      Challenge for Prayer

      The 32 tribal (Adivasi) peoples in Jharkhand amount to nearly one-third of the state’s population. Scheduled Castes are another 12%. Jharkhand’s history is littered with tribal uprisings, particularly against the excesses of British colonialism; separatist sentiments among many tribal groups continue today. The actions of the Naxalite Maoist movement add further fuel to the fire. Sporadic but frequent violence affects many, including Christian workers attempting to bring the gospel to Hindu and animist tribal groups. Pray with regard to:
      a) Christian ministry to tribal peoples. They are very diverse and often isolated and divided. There is actually much mission and ministry to tribal groups – German Lutherans (Gossner Evangelical), OM, GFA, FMPB, Vishwa Vani, GEMS, AoG and International Living Mission are just a few. Some tribal groups are up to 30% Christian (Oraon, Munda, Kharia); others are barely touched by the gospel (Kol, Bedia, Chero, other small groups). Pray that all tribal groups might have the opportunity to encounter the love of Christ.
      b) Negative reactions to evangelism are common and often violent by animists and Hindu tribals. Such rejection to evangelism is expected and is frequently orchestrated by militant Hindu groups, but it is on occasion exacerbated by evangelists’ lack of sensitivity. Pray for contextualized outreach that takes into account the unique nature of each of these peoples as well as their practical needs.

      Challenge for Prayer

      There has been significant growth in the Church. From a few thousand Christians in years past, there are now reportedly 600 congregations as well as numerous house groups meeting to worship Jesus. This is a result of the committed witness of Christian workers sent by Indian agencies to preach the gospel. Pray for the ongoing ministry of Operation Agape, FMPB, IEM, GFA, North India Community Outreach (NICO) and others. There are now over 380 Christian workers and three training schools that equip and train church planters (run by Beracah Ministries, GFA, ECI). Pray for the multiplication of believers and churches and for the fellowship and collaboration of all groups engaged in gospel work.

      Christians in Kashmir have always been few, but this is changing. In 1990, there were only 12,000 Christians, mostly low-caste or immigrant peoples. In 2000, there were over 20,000. Since then, numbers have more than doubled again. As a result of outreach, entire villages are coming to faith as a whole. Many are weary of the enmity, bloodshed and upheaval and find peace, hope and life in Christ. Most workers in Jammu are with GFA, Operation Agape, HEM(KEF) and several independent indigenous ministries; ministry in the Kashmir Valley is fraught with risk, but there is fruitfulness among both Muslims and Hindus.

Jats number over 4 million in Haryana, but there are fewer than 20 known Christians among them. There are very few known Christians among the 1.7 million Brahmins and the 750,000 Shaikhs. This state has the second-largest Sikh population and is actually seeing a significant number come into the Kingdom; pray that this might be increased and spill over to Sikhs elsewhere.

      Challenge for Prayer

      Delhi’s massive population growth – spurred by immigration and rapid urbanization – has fuelled a serious crisis. The large majority of new arrivals end up living in illegal squatter colonies that grow into slums, most lacking water, electricity, sewage and legal status. Slums are often polluted and crime-ridden, and politicians usually exploit squatters’ desperation as a means to garner votes by promising development or to legalize illegal settlements. Another 10 million are expected to swell the population by 2021. Urban planning, both long- and short-term, is crippled by inefficiency, corruption and constant change; the threat of major disruption and civil disorder over the severe lack of housing is very real. Pray that in this turmoil many might seek after the Lord Jesus Christ. Pray also that Christians might be moved to share and demonstrate the gospel in these slums; there are now over 3,000 of them in Delhi alone.
