Matthew 5:1-48; Matthew 6:1-34;
Matthew 7:1-29 (New International Version)
1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat
down. His disciples came to him, 2 and
he began to teach them, saying: 3 "Blessed
are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed
are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled. 7 Blessed
are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God. 10Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 "Blessed
are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil
against you because of me. 12 Rejoice
and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they
persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its
saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything,
except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill
cannot be hidden. 15 Neither
do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its
stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your
light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your
Father in heaven.
17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the
Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until
heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a
pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is
accomplished. 19 Anyone
who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the
same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and
teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless
your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law,
you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do
not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who
is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says
to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says,
'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. 23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the
altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of
the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your
gift. 25 "Settle
matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you
are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the
judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into
prison. 26 I tell you
the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit
adultery.' 28 But I
tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed
adultery with her in his heart. 29 If
your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown
into hell. 30 And if
your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her
a certificate of divorce.' 32 But
I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital
unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the
divorced woman commits adultery.
33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long
ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the
Lord.' 34 But I tell
you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his
footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head,
for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything
beyond this comes from the evil one.
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for
tooth.' 39 But I tell
you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek,
turn to him the other also. 40 And
if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as
well. 41 If someone
forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from
the one who wants to borrow from you.
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate
your enemy.' 44 But I
tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your
Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends
rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?
Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing
more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men,
to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in
heaven. 2 "So
when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the
truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand
know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who
sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they
love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by
men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your
room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father,
who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for
they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your
Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 "This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our
Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in
heaven. 11 Give us
today our daily bread. 12 Forgive
us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. '14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not
forgive your sins.
16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for
they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth,
they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your
face, 18 so that it
will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who
is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth
and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do
not break in and steal. 21 For
where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 "The eye is the lamp of
the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are bad, your
whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness,
how great is that darkness! 24 "No
one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or
he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God
and Money.
25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you
will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more
important than food, and the body more important than clothes?26 Look at the birds of the air;
they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father
feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add
a single hour to his life ? 28 "And
why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do
not labor or spin. 29 Yet
I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of
these. 30 If that is
how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is
thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little
faith? 31 So do not
worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we
wear?' 32 For the
pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need
them. 33 But seek
first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to
you as well. 34Therefore do
not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own.
1 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge
others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured
to you. 3 "Why do
you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to
the plank in your own eye? 4 How
can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all
the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye,
and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's
eye. 6 "Do not
give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may
trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him
who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give
him a stone? 10 Or if
he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good
gifts to those who ask him! 12 So
in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums
up the Law and the Prophets.
13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad
is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and
narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's
clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick
grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree
bears bad fruit. 18A good
tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear
good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21"Not everyone who says to me,
'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will
of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many
will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and
in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly,
'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts
them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the
streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not
fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not
put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the
streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with
a great crash." 28 When
Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his
teaching, 29 because
he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

A Living Sacrifice
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Humble Service in the Body of Christ
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Love in Action
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited.
17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[d] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."[e]
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Scroll and the Lamb
1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?" 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."
6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[a] of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God's people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals,
because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign[b] on the earth."
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!"
14 The four living creatures said, "Amen," and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Matthew 12:1-21
1 At that time Jesus went through the
grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some
heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this,
they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the
Sabbath." 3 He answered, "Haven't you read what
David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered
the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which
was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or
haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple
desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that one
greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these
words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the
innocent.8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." 9 Going
on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man
with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they
asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" 11 He
said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on
the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How
much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on
the Sabbath." 13 Then he said to the
man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it
was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But
the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that
place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, 16warning
them not to tell who he was. 17 This was to fulfill what was
spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 18 "Here is my servant
whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on
him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will
not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A
bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he leads justice to victory. 21 In his name the nations
will put their hope."
1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and a
man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were
looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he
would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said to the man with
the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone."4 Then
Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to
do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. 5 He
looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts,
said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it
out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the
Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill
Jesus.
7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake,
and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8 When they heard all
he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the
regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9 Because
of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep
the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many, so
that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11 Whenever
the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You
are the Son of God." 12 But he gave them strict orders
not to tell who he was.
13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to
him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed
twelve--designating them apostles--that they might be with him and that he
might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to
drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon
(to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James son of Zebedee and
his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of
Thunder); 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas,
James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and
Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd
gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When
his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said,
"He is out of his mind." 22 And the teachers of the
law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub ! By
the prince of demons he is driving out demons." 23 So
Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: "How can Satan drive
out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that
kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself,
that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and
is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact, no
one can enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he
first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house. 28 I
tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven
them. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will
never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." 30 He
said this because they were saying, "He has an evil spirit."
31 Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived.
Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32A crowd was
sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are
outside looking for you." 33 "Who are my mother and
my brothers?" he asked. 34 Then he looked at those
seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my
brothers! 35 Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister
and mother."

grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in
their hands and eat the kernels. 2 Some of the Pharisees
asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" 3 Jesus
answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his
companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and
taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.
And he also gave some to his companions." 5 Then Jesus
said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." 6 On
another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was
there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the
teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched
him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But
Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled
hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up
and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask
you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or
to destroy it?" 10 He looked around at them all, and then
said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and
his hand was completely restored. 11 But they were furious and
began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
12 One of those days Jesus went out to a
mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.13 When morning
came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also
designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his
brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,
Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16Judas
son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17 He went down with them and stood on a level
place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people
from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon,18 who
had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil
spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,
because power was coming from him and healing them all. 20 Looking
at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours
is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for
you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed
are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your
name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 "Rejoice in
that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is
how their fathers treated the prophets. 24"But woe to you who
are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe
to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep. 26Woe to you when all men speak well
of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.
27 "But I tell you who hear me: Love your
enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who
curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone
strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your
cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. 30 Give to
everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand
it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to
you. 32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is
that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. 33 And
if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even
'sinners' do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you
expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,'
expecting to be repaid in full.35 But love your enemies, do good to
them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward
will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the
ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is
merciful.
37 "Do not judge, and you will not be
judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be
forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good
measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into
your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." 39 He
also told them this parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will
they not both fall into a pit? 40 A student is not above his
teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 "Why
do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention
to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother,
'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see
the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye,
and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does
a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its
own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from
briers. 45 The good man brings good things out of the good
stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil
stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.
46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and
do not do what I say? 47 I will show you what he is like who
comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. 48 He
is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on
rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it,
because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words
and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the
ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it
collapsed and its destruction was complete."

The Throne in Heaven
1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this." 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits[a] of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,'[b] who was, and is, and is to come."
9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem
for a feast of the Jews. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the
Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is
called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered
colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to
lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5 One
who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When
Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a
long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" 7 "Sir,"
the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the
water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of
me." 8 Then Jesus said to him,"Get up! Pick up your
mat and walk." 9 At once the man was cured;
he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a
Sabbath, 10 and so the Jews said
to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to
carry your mat." 11 But he replied,
"The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and
walk.' " 12 So they asked him, "Who is this
fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" 13 The man
who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the
crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple
and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or
something worse may happen to you." 15 The man went away
and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on
the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. 17 Jesus said to
them, "My Father is always at his work to
this very day, and I, too, am working." 18 For this
reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only
was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making
himself equal with God. 19 Jesus gave them this
answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because
whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father
loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your
amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21 For
just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even
so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give
it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted
all judgment to the Son,23 that all may honor the
Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor
the Father, who sent him. 24 "I tell you
the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has
eternal life and will not be condemned; he
has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell
you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the
dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who
hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so
he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 27 And
he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son
of Man. 28"Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and
come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done
evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I
can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is
just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony
is not valid. 32 There is another who testifies
in my favor,and I know that his testimony about me is
valid. 33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human
testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. 36 "I
have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very
work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies
that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father
who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have
never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor
does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39 You
diligently study the Scriptures because
you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are
the Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet
you refuse to come to me to have life. 41 "I
do not accept praise from men, 42 but I know
you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I
have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else
comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you
believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the
praise that comes from the only God ? 45 "But
do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46 If
you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.47 But
since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I
say?"

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[b] of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Philadelphia 7 "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:

1 Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: "The person who does these things will live by them."[a] 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'"[b] (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'"[c] (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,"[d] that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, "Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame."[e] 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."[f]
14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"[g]
16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?"[h] 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."[i]
19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, "I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding."[j]
20 And Isaiah boldly says, "I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me."[k]
21 But concerning Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people."
