Chronological New Testament Study Day 42
John 14; John 15; John
16; John 17
1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God;
trust also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it
were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for
you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You
know the way to the place where I am going." 5 Thomas
said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know
the way?" 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the
truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If
you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know
him and have seen him." 8 Philip said, "Lord, show
us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus
answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you
such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say,
'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the
Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my
own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.11 Believe
me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least
believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell
you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He
will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And
I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the
Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will
do it. 15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you
forever-- 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him,
because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with
you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I
will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me
anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On
that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am
in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the
one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will
love him and show myself to him." 22 Then Judas (not
Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us
and not to the world?" 23 Jesus replied, "If anyone
loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come
to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me
will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to
the Father who sent me. 25 "All this I have spoken while
still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom
the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you
of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 "You heard me
say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would
be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I
have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will
believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the
prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, 31 but
the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my
Father has commanded me. "Come now; let us leave.
1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He
cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does
bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You
are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain
in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must
remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 "I
am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will
bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone
does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers;
such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If
you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will
be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear
much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 "As
the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If
you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my
Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you
this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My
command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater
love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You
are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call
you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I
have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have
made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father
will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17 This is my
command: Love each other. 18 "If the world hates you,
keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the
world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world,
but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember
the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they
persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will
obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my
name, for they do not know the One who sent me. 22 If I had
not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however,
they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates me hates my
Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them what no one
else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these
miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But
this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without
reason.' 26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send
to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he
will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you
have been with me from the beginning.
1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go
astray. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a
time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to
God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known
the Father or me. 4 I have told you this, so that when the
time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at
first because I was with you.5 "Now I am going to him who sent
me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6 Because
I have said these things, you are filled with grief. 7 But I
tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away,
the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When
he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness
and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in
regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me
no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of
this world now stands condemned. 12 "I have much more to
say to you, more than you can now bear.13 But when he, the Spirit
of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his
own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to
come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine
and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father
is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it
known to you. 16 "In a little while you will see me no
more, and then after a little while you will see me." 17 Some
of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a
little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will
see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" 18 They
kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand
what he is saying." 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask
him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I
meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a
little while you will see me'? 20 I tell you the truth, you
will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief
will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain
because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish
because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So
with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will
rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day
you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give
you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not
asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be
complete. 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a
time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell
you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my
name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No,
the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I
came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the
world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." 29 Then
Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures
of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that
you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe
that you came from God." 31 "You believe at
last!" Jesus answered. 32 "But a time is coming, and
has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me
all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 "I
have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you
will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify
you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he
might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now
this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on
earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now,
Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the
world began. 6 "I have revealed you to those whom you
gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have
obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have
given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave
me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and
they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not
praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All
I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through
them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are
still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the
power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are
one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them
safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to
destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 13 "I
am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so
that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I
have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the
world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that
you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They
are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them
by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the
world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify
myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. 20 "My
prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me
through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father,
just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world
may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the
glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I
in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world
know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 "Father,
I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory,
the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the
world. 25 "Righteous Father, though the world does not
know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I
have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that
the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."

Romans 4
Abraham Justified by Faith
1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. 3 What does Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."[a]
4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness. 6 David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
7 "Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them."[b]
9 Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham's faith was credited to him as righteousness. 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17 As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations."[c] He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.
18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."[d] 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." 23 The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Chronological New Testament Study Day 41
Luke 22; John 13
1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover,
was approaching, 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of
the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of
the people. 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one
of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the
officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5They
were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6 He consented,
and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was
present. 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the
Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and
John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." 9 "Where
do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. 10He replied,
"As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the
owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat
the Passover with my disciples?' 12 He will show you a large
upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." 13 They
left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the
Passover. 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles
reclined at the table. 15And he said to them, "I have eagerly
desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For
I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom
of God." 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and
said, "Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell
you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God
comes." 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,
and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in
remembrance of me." 20 In the same way, after the supper
he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which
is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to
betray me is with mine on the table. 22The Son of Man will go as it
has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." 23 They
began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. 24 Also
a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus
said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who
exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.26 But you
are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the
youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For
who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not
the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You
are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer
on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones,
judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 "Simon, Simon,
Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for
you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back,
strengthen your brothers." 33 But he replied, "Lord,
I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." 34 Jesus
answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will
deny three times that you know me." 35 Then Jesus asked
them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack
anything?" "Nothing," they answered. 36 He said
to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you
don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is
written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this
must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its
fulfillment." 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord,
here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. 39 Jesus
went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.40 On
reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into
temptation." 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond
them, knelt down and prayed, 42 "Father, if you are
willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43 An
angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And
being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of
blood falling to the ground. 45 When he rose from prayer and
went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 "Why
are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation." 47 While he was still speaking
a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was
leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus
asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" 49 When
Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we
strike with our swords?" 50 And one of them struck the
servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. 51 But
Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and
healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the
officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I
leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every
day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But
this is your hour--when darkness reigns." 54 Then seizing
him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter
followed at a distance. 55 But when they had kindled a fire in
the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with
them. 56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She
looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." 57 But
he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. 58 A
little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of
them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. 59 About
an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for
he is a Galilean." 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't
know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster
crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then
Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster
crows today, you will disown me three times." 62 And he
went outside and wept bitterly. 63The men who were guarding Jesus
began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and
demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" 65 And they said
many other insulting things to him. 66 At daybreak the council
of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law,
met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 "If you
are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If
I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you,
you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will
be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." 70 They
all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are
right in saying I am." 71 Then they said, "Why do we
need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the
time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved
his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. 2 The
evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas
Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the
Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and
was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off
his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After
that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet,
drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He
came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my
feet?" 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what
I am doing, but later you will understand." 8 "No,"
said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered,
"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." 9 "Then,
Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my
head as well!" 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has
had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are
clean, though not every one of you." 11 For he knew who
was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When
he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his
place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13 "You
call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now
that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one
another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should
do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant
is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent
him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if
you do them. 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know
those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my
bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19 "I am
telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe
that I am He. 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone
I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." 21 After
he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you
the truth, one of you is going to betray me." 22 His
disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One
of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon
Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he
means." 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him,
"Lord, who is it?"26 Jesus answered, "It is the one
to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the
dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son
of Simon. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered
into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,28 but
no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since
Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what
was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30 As
soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. 31When
he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is
glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will
glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 "My
children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and
just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34 "A
new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love
one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my
disciples, if you love one another." 36 Simon Peter asked
him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am
going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." 37 Peter
asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for
you." 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay
down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will
disown me three times!

Romans 3
God's Faithfulness
1 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2 Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.
3 What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God's faithfulness? 4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge."[a]
5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6 Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7 Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?" 8 Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is just!
No One Is Righteous
9 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good, not even one."[b]
13 "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit."[c]
"The poison of vipers is on their lips."[d]
14 "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."[e]
15 "Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery mark their ways,
17 and the way of peace they do not know."[f]
18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."[g]
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
Righteousness Through Faith
21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in[h] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

Chronological New Testament Study Day 40
Matthew 26; Mark 14
1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said
to his disciples, 2 "As you know, the Passover is two
days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." 3 Then
the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the
high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they plotted to
arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him. 5 "But not
during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the
people." 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a
man known as Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an
alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was
reclining at the table. 8 When the disciples saw this, they
were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9 "This
perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the
poor." 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why
are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The
poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 When
she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 I
tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what
she has done will also be told, in memory of her." 14 Then
one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests 15 and
asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?"
So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. 16 From then
on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. 17 On
the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and
asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the
Passover?" 18 He replied, "Go into the city to a
certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am
going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' " 19 So
the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. 20 When
evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve.21 And
while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will
betray me." 22 They were very sad and began to say to him
one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" 23 Jesus
replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will
betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written
about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better
for him if he had not been born." 25 Then Judas, the one
who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered,
"Yes, it is you." 26 While they were eating, Jesus
took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,
"Take and eat; this is my body." 27 Then he took the
cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of
you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out
for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will
not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it
anew with you in my Father's kingdom." 30 When they had
sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then
Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me,
for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the
flock will be scattered.' 32 But after I have risen, I will go
ahead of you into Galilee." 33 Peter replied, "Even
if all fall away on account of you, I never will." 34 "I
tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the
rooster crows, you will disown me three times." 35 But
Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown
you." And all the other disciples said the same. 36 Then
Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to
them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37 He
took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be
sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul
is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with
me." 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to
the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be
taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." 40Then he
returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep
watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41 "Watch
and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but
the body is weak." 42 He went away a second time and
prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away
unless I drink it, may your will be done." 43 When he
came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So
he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same
thing. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them,
"Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son
of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us
go! Here comes my betrayer!" 47 While he was still
speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed
with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the
people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them:
"The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." 49 Going at
once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. 50 Jesus
replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped
forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of
Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of
the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52 "Put your sword
back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword
will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my
Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of
angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that
say it must happen in this way?" 55 At that time Jesus
said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with
swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,
and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place
that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the
disciples deserted him and fled. 57 Those who had arrested
Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and
the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a
distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down
with the guards to see the outcome. 59 The chief priests and
the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they
could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many
false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61and
declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild
it in three days.' "62 Then the high priest stood up and said
to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these
men are bringing against you?" 63 But Jesus remained
silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the
living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64"Yes,
it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the
future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One
and coming on the clouds of heaven." 65 Then the high
priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need
any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What
do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. 67 Then
they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and
said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" 69 Now
Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him.
"You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. 70 But
he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking
about," he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway,
where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was
with Jesus of Nazareth." 72 He denied it again, with an
oath: "I don't know the man!" 73 After a little
while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one
of them, for your accent gives you away." 74 Then he
began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know
the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter
remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will
disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or the people may riot." 3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year's wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly. 6 "Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." 10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over. 12 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" 13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' 15 He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there." 16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. 17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me--one who is eating with me." 19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely not I?" 20 "It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born." 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." 23 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. 25 "I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God." 26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 "You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." 29 Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not." 30 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today--yes, tonight--before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times." 31 But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same. 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch." 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 "Abba", Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." 39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" 43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 "Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind. 53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders and teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. 57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.' " 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" 62 "I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." 63 The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked. 64 "You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him. 66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said. 68 But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway. 69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them." 70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean." 71 He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about." 72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.
